FAQs

How different is this from polyester putty?

J-B Weld Multi-Purpose Putty will give you overall similar performance as other polyester putties, but will clog sandpaper less than other putties, and has extended working time.

Will this work with polyester cream hardener?

Yes, J-B Weld Multi-Purpose Putty will work with any cream hardeners for polyester putties (also known as BPO cream hardener), and with any cream hardener colors (red, blue or white).

How much cream hardener should I user?

Lay down a bead of hardener across the diameter of the putty you have scooped out. If you want to weigh it, the ratio of putty to hardener is 50:1 by weight.

How do I prepare the surface for Multi-Purpose Putty?

You should clean the surface with degreasing cleaner, then sand with 80 grit sandpaper (or lower), and then wipe clean with a solvent (such as acetone).

What surfaces will Multi-Purpose Putty not work well on?

Multi-Purpose Putty will not work on low-surface-energy plastics, such as polyethylene and polypropylene. We also can't guarantee that Multi-Purpose Putty will work over painted surfaces, so we recommend sanding off paint before applying the putty to surface.

Why did Multi-Purpose Putty not adhere to the surface?

Likely because the surface preparation was not performed properly (see question about surface preparation above).

Why do I have pinholes in the Multi-Purpose Putty?

Pinholes result from trapped air, which comes from improper mixing of the putty, or from applying the putty too thick.

Why is my Multi-Purpose Putty curing so quickly?

Adding too much cream hardener can cause the product to cure quickly. Additionally, heat and warm climates can accelerate the cure, so if the application environment is hot, expect the material to cure faster.

How do I remove Multi-Purpose Putty from a surface?

If the putty has not cured, use a putty knife or similar tool to scrape the filler from the surface. If the putty has cured, sand the putty down, and then use a heat gun to soften remaining material to scrap off with a putty knife or similar tool.

Is Multi-Purpose Putty available in gallons?

Yes

What is the storage temperature of Multi-Purpose Putty?

Between 50-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Store the putty indoors only.

Can Multi-Purpose Putty be thinned down with solvent?

We do not recommend thinning Multi-Purpose Putty down with any material.

Is Multi-Purpose Putty stain-free?

No, Multi-Purpose Putty is not stain free.
